Tai Chi and Brain Health

November 2025

Welcome everyone to our November newsletter :)

I hope you have been enjoying some gorgeous sunny as well as raining days.

Recently I have had a few enquiries about Tai Chi class for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Can Tai Chi and Qi Gong treat people with TBI safely and effectively?

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are aerobic mind-body practices with known benefits for maintaining health and improving chronic health condition. In 2024, BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies published a systematic review, which is the first time, assessing the safety and effectiveness of Tai Chi/QI Gong for TBI. The systematic review, including 3 randomised controlled trials ( RCT) and 2 non-RCTs, all found that Tai Chi improved functional, psychological and/or cognitive outcomes. The full publication can be read at https://bmccomplementmedtherapies.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12906-024-04350-3.

The university of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and Health has some TBI resource available for clinicians and TBI families https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/our-research/research-centres/acquired-brain-injury-communication-lab/tbiconnect.html. A personal story of Shane, a brain injury survivor, shared at Brain Injury SA gives you some real insight about a journey of rehabilitation https://braininjurysa.org.au/from-injury-to-triumph-shanes-powerful-message-about-finding-positivity-and-discovering-what-truly-gives-life-purpose/.

If you know someone who endured brain injury, or want to improve their brain function, such as memory, or to maintain their brain health with a calm state of mind, maybe let them consider Tai Chi and Qi Gong as a complementary therapy.

A friendly reminder: our community Tai Chi session at the Centennial Park on 15th November Saturday. Everyone is welcome! Booking is essential via online link https://events.humanitix.com/tai-chi-amongst-the-trees.

The last but not least, welcome all students, including the new faces, joined our term 4. I hope you have enjoyed your class so far, with the gentle and complex (at times) movements.

Stay well,
Fang & the Team
