Tai Chi – Strengthen Immune functions and Improve Quality of Life

May 2026

Welcome everyone to our May newsletter.

As autumn settles in and the cooler weather approaches, we may feel the impact of seasonal changes on our bodies, particularly in people with certain autoimmune conditions.

As a holistic mind-body exercise and moving meditation, Tai Chi practice does not just make you feel relaxed, it acts as a bridge between physical movement and internal biological regulation. Many studies have found that Tai Chi practice improve immune functions, such as
Reduction of Systemic Inflammation, with positive outcomes in people with Rheumatoid Arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.
Cortisol regulation and nervous system balance, which allows the body to shift from a “flight and flight” stress state to “rest and digest ” state which is the optimal environment for immune resilience.
Cellular immune response.
Lymphatic flow. Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system ( a key part of the immune system) relies on muscle movement and deep breathing to circulate. The gentle, rhythmic movements and deep diaphragmatic breathing of Tai Chi act as a manual pump for lymph fluid. This helps the body more effectively transport white blood cells and filter out cellular waste and toxins.

When you have built stronger immune system, as a result, your internal environment is more resilient, you experience less impact from the environment, you have less pain, you feel better and happier with better quality of life.

Over years, people have asked me what is important when you start to learn Tai Chi.

My answer is simple. If you want to get a great result, you need to learn from a good qualified Tai Chi teacher who can guide you to learn and practise Tai Chi properly. Not someone who has a qualification ( it is important, but not that important), but someone who understand Tai Chi well and who can teach well.

The other important factor is to learn Tai Chi with patience and practice Tai Chi consistently. 15 minutes every day is better than two hour once a week.

To learn Tai Chi, it is essential to learn Tai Chi guiding principles. I won’t bore you with a lengthy writing, but understanding Tai Chi principles will make you the beneficiary, the biggest winner at the end, so it is worthy of investing your time to study them.

1. Light and insubstantial energy at the top of head.
2. Contain the chest and Pull up the back
3. Loosen the waist and Kua (pelvic region)
4. Distinguish empty and solid
5. Sink the shoulders and drop the elbows
6. Use mind intent not force.
7. Upper and Lower body follow one another
8. Inner and Outer are united
9. Move with continuity
10. Seek stillness in movement
