Tai Chi for better health and vitality
October 2023
Tai Chi leads to a balanced Yin & Yang Lifestyle
Hello Tai Chi students, friends and enthusiasts, a warm welcome to our 2023 October Newsletter!
What a treat to learn from Shifu James Gao who has so much to offer in Yang style Tai Chi and push-hands skills on the weekend! David, one of the workshop participants, was surprised how much he has learned to further enhance his tai chi skills in a very short time.
Ee ling, another workshop participant, loves the fact that Tai Chi practice represents the Yin and Yang philosophy which she can apply to her relationship with family and coworkers. “How to take others’ opinions in while being grounded and staying calm. The Yin & Yang exchange and mindfulness are so important” as Ee Ling reflected Tai Chi application in life.
In Tai Chi push-hands, it is called “Invest in loss”. My understanding is to train oneself to let the ego go and find peace and emptiness through “stillness in movement”. In Wolfe Lowenthal’s book “There are no secrets- Professor Cheng Man Ching and his Tai Chi Chuan”, the concept of “Invest in loss” is well elaborated.
Have you heard the lost horse story? In Chinese proverb as 塞翁失马, 焉知非福 (Sai Weng Shi Ma, Yan Zhi Fei Fu)
This ancient story is about an old man lost his horse and people came to say comfort him, but to everyone’s surprise, he was not at all sad and said ‘This may be a good thing, who knows?’ Few days later, the missing horse returned to the old man with another horse. From this story, it tells people that a bad thing may become a good thing under certain conditions. This is a short version. The longer version is even more interesting.
In Tai Chi, the Yin & Yang exchange is constant and continuous, so does in life. I would like to think that Tai Chi practice can reinforce our awareness and may enable us to see things differently with a calmer and more dynamic and positive headspace.
I am hosting Ba Duan Jin Qi Gong Workshop on 11th November. The workshop details can be found https://meridian-
I want to take this opportunity to thank all my students who have been on the journey with me and Luke for the last few years. Your support and commitment mean a lot. Observing and watching your continuous progress and growth is very rewarding.
I would like to share this with you from excerpt Masonic ritual.
” Wisdom to conduct us in all our undertakings;
Strength to support us in all our difficulties;
Beauty to adorn the inward man (men/women). ”
To your health,
