Tai Chi for Healing and Staying Strong Through Winter
July 2024
Winter can be a challenging time and take a toll on our physical body because the cold climate has a huge impact on our body, such as on the cardiovascular system and circulatory system.
Being the believer of “Exercise is Medicine without the side effect”, I have been doing evidence-based research for a long time. I agree that medicine certainly benefits us when we need it urgently, for example, to reduce fever or fight bacteria-caused infection. However, if we really want to treat the root cause of chronic disease and illness, exercise would arguably be a much better choice for most of us when our behaviour change occurs and we integrate regular exercise into our daily life. If you are interested, the “Exercise is Medicine” Australia website offers the public with evidence-based information https://exerciseismedicine.org.au/resources/. I also like to think regular movements are part of daily exercise.
You may feel like catching a cold is an inevitable part of winter, but can we do something about it to prevent? Themis Chryssidis, an accredited dietitian, the founder of Sprout Cooking School from Adelaide, suggests immune-boosting food to eat over winter, such as Vitamin C, A, E and healthy fats. His article can be found at https://www.healthpartners.com.au/health/immune-boosting-foods.
There are plenty of fitness activities these days to choose from, such as running, cycling, Yoga, Pilates, various martial arts styles, strengthening and conditioning training. Now the question is why Tai Chi and Qi Gong is an excellent choice for our health?
Many evidence-based studies have shown how tai chi and qi gong offers students with desired strength and balance, improve quality of life, specially internalised harmony, and something that makes you happy! It is one of the few exercises that require nothing, but yourself, and it is ageless! This testimonial has been approved over centuries in China and now in the world. Anything that is not good enough won’t last long. They come and go like fashion. Like gold, after burning, it doesn’t tarnish. Tai Chi is like the gold; it should be seen as a treasure.
Think about it.
